ECI Fuel Injection Throttle Body

Fuel Pump With Mixture Control Bracket

Fuel Tanks removed to install return lines in fuel tank outboard rib.

Hole in the end fuel tank rib.       Fittings for return fuel line.      Fitting with pro seal applied in outboard tank rib.

I made 4, 90 degree angle brackets from .060 aluminum with holes drilled and plastic bushings installed and secured them, using pro seal, to the back of the tanks. I then installed the fuel return line through the bushings. This installation fits the RV6 very well and it took about 5 hours for me to complete.

Fuel Injection Throttle Body Air Filter With Alternate Air

I designed this air intake with an alternate air valve which is operated from the cockpit and takes air from inside the engine cowling if the air filter becomes blocked. A K&N cone shaped air filter fits inside the fiberglass cone to provide filtered air. The air intake and valve is machined from aluminum with an arm welded in a position to connect a cable from the cockpit to operate the valve. This design requires an air inlet through the front of the engine cowling and performance is improved with RAM AIR effect.

Van's New Locking Fuel Cap

The quality of this gas cap is superb and it is very easy to install. Just pro seal it in per the instructions and clean carefully with lacquer thinner.

Installing the New ECI Fuel Injection System Return Lines on the RV6
This is the procedure I used on my RV6

  1. Ground the airplane.

  2. Remove the fuel tank drain plugs and drain the fuel into a fuel container.
  3. Remove the fuel tank.
  4. Measure and mark the outboard fuel tank rib 6 ¼ inches forward of fuel tank back wall and 5/8 inch down from top fuel tank skin. See photo #1. This is the spot to drill a 7/16 inch hole to install the AN 833-4D bulkhead fitting.
  5. Drill the 7/16 inch hole at the mark. As you drill, use a vacuum hose inserted into the tank to catch drill debris. Some debris may still go into the tank. Tip the tank and vacuum until all of the debris have been removed.
  6. Debur the outside and inside of the tank around the newly drilled 7/16” hole then vacuum out the tank again making sure there is no debris left inside the tank.
  7. Install the AN 833-4D using an AN 960-716 washer followed by a AN 924-4D nut shown in Photo #2 . Coat all parts with pro seal (from Van’s) before assembly. Coat parts in the area that contacts the tank rib. Also coat the nut, washer and the threads of the AN 833-4D but do not get proseal in the end and plug the hole in the AN833-4D. When you tighten the nut, proseal will ooze out and seal around the AN833-4D. NOTE: Use your fingers to install the washer and nut through the fuel tank filler hole. Tighten the nut by holding it with your fingers while twisting the AN 833 with the other hand until tight and in the correct position as shown in Photo #6. USE RUBBER GLOVES.
  8. Fabricate four 90 degree brackets from .060 aluminum. The brackets should be 1x3 inches long with the 90 degree bend ¾ “ from one end. See Photo #4.  Drill a hole for a ¼ inch ID plastic bushing in each bracket on the short side of the angle. Drill 2 holes in the longer end of the bracket to let the pro seal ooze out to help hold the bracket in place. See Photo #7. With the tank leading edge down, place the four brackets on the back of the tank using a generous amount of pro seal. Make sure the short side of the angle faces aft. The spacing should be as shown in Photo #3.
  9. Let the pro seal cure then install the ¼ “ ID plastic bushings into the hole in the bracket.  Install the ¼ inch soft aluminum tubing though the bushings. Install the AN 818-4D Nut and the AN819-4D Sleeve on both ends of  the ¼” tube running along the back of the tank. Install the AN 815-4D Union on the end of the ¼” tube that is on the inboard side of the tank and install the AN 821-4D Elbow on the out board side of the tank. See Photo #6 & Photo#3.
  10. Install a AN 818-4D Nut and a AN 819-4D Sleeve on each end of a short ¼” tube to run from the AN 833-4D Bulkhead fitting mounted to the outboard side of the tank to the AN 821-4D Elbow at the outboard aft corner of the tank. One end of the AN 821-4D Elbow will be installed to the short tube and the other end will be installed to the long tube running along the aft side of the tank. See Photo #8. Be sure the fuel line and fittings do not touch the tank at any point. Check to be sure all fittings are tight. Apply some pro seal on the fuel line and the plastic bushings on both sides to make it stable. See Photo #7.
  11. Repeat the processes for the right fuel tank.
  12. Install fuel return line from the fuel selector valve to the engine driven fuel pump. Install fuel return line from fuel selector valve through the side of the fuse to the fuel return line on the aft side of the each tank.
  13. Install fuel tanks on the wings. Connect all lines.

NOTE: RV7, 8, 9 have Z brackets attached to the rear of the fuel tank that can be drilled to install the fuel return line to each fuel tank.
